Trade SkillsOperating Engineers primarily work in highway construction or site preparation. Apprentices learn to operate and maintain a wide variety of machines to excavate and grade earth or hoist and erect structural and reinforcing steel. Equipment training includes backhoes, bulldozers, cranes, front-end loaders, power shovels and scrapers.
