What is swine flu?

Swine flu is a respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses that regularly cause outbreaks in pigs. There have been reports of serious illness and deaths due to swine flu in Mexico, but the recently confirmed cases in the United States have been mild. There are no confirmed cases in Colorado.

How can I protect myself from the swine flu?

The district reminds students, staff and families to take personal precautions to decrease their chances of getting the flu. There are everyday actions people can take to stay healthy.

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

  • If you get sick, the Center for Disease Control recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

Is DPS prepared to respond to an outbreak?

DPS does have a Continuity of Operations Plan to respond to comprehensive infectious disease outbreaks such as pandemic influenza or tuberculosis. The plan would be activated if a disease outbreak impacts the district. No active cases have been identified in Colorado. How will I get more information?

Should parent action be required due to a public health concern, the district will send out information to families. Information related to DPS will be posted on this Web site. Please refer to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment for official information.
